Story of a granite woman
The most often question asked by the visitors is about the female granite sculpture located near the mansion house of Von Nickolay. The sculpture has got a historical background, and not a one , but three. The first story connected the statue with the modern styled building that belonged to the company “Hakli Lalluka and Co” (Vyborg, Vokzalnaya str,7) and was constructed by the architect Allan Schulman in 1906. The building was decorated with six granite statues, that are considered to be the first granite female statues created by Finnish sculptor Emil Halonen.
The second story explains the appearance of the statue as a consequence of the World War Second, when a lot of decorations and monuments from the mansion were lost.
The third story tells about the surprising discovery of the statue by Vyborg schoolboy Ilia Sokolov. While playing he saw a part of the sculpture and informed the park workers. With the help of Finnish foundation “Pro Monrepos” and volunteers the statue was released from the ground and installed in the mansion yard .
On the photos: workers and volunteers from the foundation "Pro Morepos" (Olga Glazkova, Gennady Nikitin, Teivo Muronen, Lauri Tihonen and others).
Two more sculptures from the building “Hakli Lalluka and Co” are stored in Vyborg Castle.
